I’ve found a place where you can work at home in the field of your choice, as a freelancer.  If you have skills in the fields of writing, photography, editing, web development, law, sales, engineering, and more, you need to check out elance.com.    Elance.com is a community-based site, where employers post jobs and projects and “providers” (freelance employees) make bids on the jobs.  Employers choose the provider they want to work with, and pay upon completion of the project.

Like eBay, elance has a feedback interface, so that potential employers can see how happy previous employers have been with a provider’s work.

In order to become an elance provider, you must complete ad Admissions Test.  The test covers concepts about elance, its terms of service, and their rules for employment.  This is so that elance can be sure that potential elance providers have a working knowledge of the site.

There is a free basic membership, which will allow you to bid on and complete projects for elance employers, but there are also different paid membership plans.  The paid membership plans rance in price from $9.95 – $39.95 per month.   The higher the monthly cost, the more benefits each plan has.  Again, you can find employment at elance with a basic free membership plan.  Paid memberships simply offer more perks and more job availablity.

Several companies that hire employees to work at home conduct job interviews. Prospective employees for home jobs are usually called at home for a phone interview. If the company that you’ve applied for contacts you for a phone interview, there are a few things you need to do in order to make sure your interview runs as smoothly as possible.

Silence is Golden

The interviewer wants to hear you –and only you– during your conversation. For this reason, it’s important that you turn off all stereos and televisions. If you plan to sit in the kitchen, make sure the dish washer isn’t running during your phone interview. Also, it’s of utmost importance to keep your kiddos quiet while you’re on your phone interview. Preschool kids and older can safely watch a video in another room while you’re on the phone. For younger children, try to schedule your interview during the child’s nap time to ensure peace and quiet.

Know Yourself

Have a copy of your resume –or at the very least, a handwritten list of your previous employment and education– in front of you. If your interviewer asks you a question, it will help if you have your employment and education history in front of you. Sometimes, people being interviewed get flustered and find it hard to recall dates and duties, and having it in front of you in black and white will help.

Be Alert and Well-Rested

Even though your interviewer can’t see you, exhaustion can take a toll on your interview. Exhaustion affects your memory and mood, among other things. For best results, get to bed early the night before your interview. If you have an infant who doesn’t sleep through the night yet, be wise and don’t schedule your phone interview for 8AM. Instead, schedule during the day, after you’ve been able to get a power nap.

Be Prepared

Just as with an interview done in person, you should be prepared for your phone interview. For several days in advance, prepare for how you will answer common questions. Decide what questions –if any– you will ask the interviewer about this work at home job. Amazon has an opportunity for you to work from home, fulfilling what they call HITs.   A HIT is a Human Intelligence Task, which are small jobs that can only be done by humans.   Tasks are requested by people and companies online, and Amazon’s turks complete these taks for pay.  Pay varies by the task and the person who requested the task.  At the time this entry is being written, the turk marketplace boasts nearly 36,000 available HITs for pay.  The longer you work, and the more HITs you complete, the higher your subsequent HITs will pay.

Amazon turk tasks range from the quick and easy  (find out college entrance deadlines, and supply URLs where the info was found) to the more involved (transcribe a 75 minute MP3 audio lesson).   Pay ranges from (at the time of this review being written) $0.05 for the very simple tasks, to $12 (at present, although there have been higher-paying HITs on the site).

In order to begin working as an Amazon Mechanical Turk, go to Amazon’s Turk registration page.  Once your registration is completed, you can start searching for HITs that you qualify for.  You can arrange the HITs in several different orders, including according to date, according to time allotted for the project, and according to the amount of pay (lowest to highest, or highest to lowest).

Many of you have heard of ChaCha (www.ChaCha.com) as a way to work at home and make money online. The opportunity is simple: take a couple of skills tests to determine your typing speed and accuracy, as well as how well you are able to research information online. ChaCha guides earn money by logging onto the ChaCha interface (also known as the “underground”), and answering questions sent in to ChaCha from users all over the United States.

ChaCha guides log on any time they want to, in order to work. Employees set their own hours, working as much or as little as they want to. All work is done online, using a home computer and internet access. Although the service is text-based, employees of ChaCha do not use or need a cell phone in order to work for the company. Users text their questions to ChaCha, and employees send answers back to the users’ phones with their computers.

ChaCha.com Pay

Because ChaCha employees set their own work at home hours, earnings vary greatly. Hourly wages average approximately $7, but those who can type and research more quickly do earn significantly more.

Employees have two options for payment: you can choose to receive a paper check mailed to you (which you are only eligible for once you reach a $100 threshold), or you can apply for a ChaCha debit card, through their partner bank (First Internet Bank). Employees who choose the debit card option are able to get paid whenever they want to (just request payment, and it will be immediately deposited to your First Internet Bank account, available via your debit card).

Some ChaCha employees work just a couple of hours per week, while others treat ChaCha as a full time job, earning well over $1,000 per month.

ChaCha offers frequent incentives, in the form of contests. For instance, on holiday weekends, they have contests for a certain dollar amount, every few hours. Employees who are logged on and actively working during these times are the only ones eligible to win the prizes.
