Tips to Save Money on Gas

With the price of gas over $3 per gallon in some parts of the country… and predictions that it will hit $4 per gallon by summer, you need to figure out ways to save gas.   Following even a few of the tips below will reduce how much gas you use, and save you money in the process.

1.  Walk.  If you only need to travel a few blocks, walk instead of driving.  You’ll burn fat instead of gas.

2.  Cycle.  If you live within a few miles of your office, think about cycling to work at least a few days a week.  Doing so will strengthen your heart and fatten your wallet.

3.  Work from home.  Add up how many miles per year you drive, and determine approximately how much you spend on gas.  Shocked?  Ask your employer if it’s possible for you to work from home, or see if you can find another job that will allow you to work from home.  (Check the opportunities on this site, to see which at home jobs you qualify for).

4.  Cruise control.  A constant, steady speed has been shown to save gasoline.

5.  Park in the shade.  Hot temperatures cause gas to evaporate.  Keeping your car cool will keep this from happening.  If it’s hot outdoors, park in a parking garage, or under a shady tree.  At home, use a carport or garage.

6.  Use a fuel-efficient car.  Heavier autos require more gas to move them.

7.  Don’t top off the tank.  When you’re filling up, and the nozzle automatically shuts off, don’t force more gas into the tank to “top it off.”  That gas will be spilled out of the tank, or otherwise burned off rapidly, due to overfill.

8.  Roll up the windows and keep that tail gate up.  Some people think that rolling down the windows to avoid using the air conditioner will save gas.  Wrong.  Open windows actually reduce a car’s aerodynamics, and cause a “drag” effect on the car.   Open tail gates have also been proven to actually cause MORE gas consumption.

9.  Maintain your vehicle.   Regular oil changes, changing air filters, and other recommended maintenance helps keep your car running more fuel-efficient.

10. Avoid rush hour.  The start-stop-start-stop of rush-hour driving wastes an ungodly amount of gas.   Getting to work early and leaving a little late (or a little early if your boss allows) will make your commute smooth sailing, and will save you a lot of gas and money.

11. Buy cool gas.  If you purchase gas during the hottest time of day, it is molecularly expanded… thus it’s less actual gas per gallon.  Buy during cooler hours (morning or night), to get more bang for your buck.

12. No idling.  Letting your car idle is the same as rolling down the window and tossing dollar bills into the wind.  If you’re going to be sitting in the car for more than a minute, turn off the car and roll down the windows to keep cool.

13. Drive slower.  Driving faster doesn’t just get you to your destination quicker, it also burns your gas quicker.  Stick to the speed limit.  You’ll still get to where you’re going, and you’ll still have gas when you get there.

14. Drive in higher gears.  In manual transmissions, drive in the highest gear that you can.  Driving in lower gears burns gas quicker.

15. Drive nice.  Aggressive driving, such as acceleratingly too quickly, burns gas quicker.  Accelerate gradually and you’ll save gas.

16. Lose some weight.  Cargo weight, that is.  The heavier the load, the harder your car has to work.  If you’re still carrying around your grill and ice chest from the tail gate party, get it out of there!  Lightening your load will save you gas.

17. Lump your errands together.  Sunday night, make a list of all the things you need to get done that week.  Instead of doing three things on three different trips, do them all at once.  Drop the dog off at the groomers, pick up the dry cleaning, go grocery shopping, and pick up the dog on your way home.

18. Carpool.  If you have friends who live and work the places that you do, try setting up a carpool.  All of you will save gas and money in the process.
